Just a few days ago news and images of huge icebergs just off the coast of Newfoundland circled the world. In the past it happend occasionally that they came close to shore, carried by an southbound ocean current all the way from the arctic glaciers of Greenland. This year it seemed to be many more and many more huge ones than before. Experts commented on this as an indication for extensive global warming.
Also in Beijing, Chinas capital, the weather has been exceptionally hot for the season. The more I was surprised, to find an iceberg in the middle of a small lake located in Ritan park, one of the most popular recreational sites of the town. On wednesday it was still a sight measuring approximately 12 by 6 feet. No one could tell me how it got there. But as anything can happen in China, this incident was not even worth mentionning in the local news.
This morning when jogging in the park, the iceberg had melted down to a dirty little ice floe. And I believe when temperatures are rising to a 34°C today, it will be vanished by tomorrow morning. It would be interesting to know, if any other readers of this blog have noticed icebergs in strange places theses days. When I showed the first photo to friend of mine who is studying global climate systems in Oxford, he frowned and presumed that the Chinese make icebergs of plastic. When showing him todays shot he realized that they make icebergs of Photoshop!
